Surrounded by the beautiful Tongass National Forest, El Capitan Lodge was fortunate to purchase one of the few private parcels in this large undeveloped area and, as a result, has become a world-class sport fishing destination for Salmon and Halibut anglers.
In Sea Otter Sound, an area known for its excellent Salmon and Halibut fishing, we troll and mooch for trophy-size King and Silver Salmon or drift fish for the record-breaking Halibut and Rockfish.
El Capitan uses quality fishing equipment and high performance tackle to ensure that guests have the best chance to boat every fish that strikes their line.
King Salmon (Chinook) are the largest but least abundant of the salmon species found in Alaskan waters. Peak season for Kings is mid-May through early July. Silver Salmon (Coho) are second in size to Kings with average weights from 10 to 20 pounds. Peak season for Silvers is early July through mid-September.
Halibut, largest of the Pacific flatfish species, are aggressive predators. Most are in the 25 - 40 pound range; however, quite a few "barn doors" weigh in well over 100 pounds.
In addition to salmon and halibut fishing in Alaska, El Capitan offers freshwater fishing adventures for Salmon and Trout.
El Capitan discovered the best rod builder for salmon and halibut fishing to be Lamiglas. As for reels, Penn Level Wind 330 GTI for Halibut and Okuma Level Wind CN-20D with line depth counters for Salmon are standard issue.
El Capitan’s remote location enhances the relaxed atmosphere of the chalet-style lodge where conversation, hospitality and delicious meals are served in abundance. Gourmet meals prepared by a top-notch chef are enhanced with local seafood delicacies that will satisfy any angler’s appetite.
Guests arrive at El Capitan by floatplane or boat and quickly are encompassed in a majestic forest of towering Alaskan cedar, Sitka spruce, and western hemlock. The closest neighbors include Sitka deer, wolves, bald eagles, sea otters, seals, whales, and black bear.
Linked together by a charming rustic boardwalk of rough-hewn logs, the private cedar cabins--each with a separate bedroom, full bath, hot and cold running water, 24 hour electricity and separately controlled heating units--satisfy guests’ privacy, whereas the lodge offers more communal activities for meeting new friends.Wireless internet access is available throughout the entire lodge facility. Twenty guests are considered to be a full house, but El Capitan will accommodate larger groups if booked as a single party.
