Alaska Fishing Vacations - What is Your Favorite Fish?
Summer is around the corner. For most summer offers the opportunity to break with routines and indulge oneself in a little rest and relaxation. For others, summer conjures visions of adventure and travel to exotic destinations. I am writing to the later group who find fulfillment in the outdoors. Mind you, I have nothing against some well needed rest and relaxation, but to me, it feels that much better battling a feisty King Salmon or giant halibut.
One of my favorite outdoor activities is fishing, and nowhere have I found the access great fishing and diversity of nature than in Alaska. An Alaska fishing vacation ranks high among anglers because of the legendary salmon and halibut fishing. Salmon fishing in Alaska attracts more anglers than any other species. Salmon run from May through September. King Salmon are the largest and most prized of all. Weighing up to 75 lbs, a trophy King Salmon is reigns as the ultimate sport-fishing target species. Coho or silver Salmon are a close second. Averaging 10-15 pounds, silver salmon are pound for pound one of Alaska's fighting species. Coho will often become airborne and perform amazing acrobatics once hooked.
Halibut fishing in Alaska is a close second to salmon fishing in attracting anglers to Alaska. Alaskan halibut reside on the ocean floor. Large halibut, referred to as "barn doors" can reach weights of up to 450 lbs. Records have shown these monsters to weight in at over 700lbs! The optimum size halibut is in the 30-50LB range. Bait can range from salmon heads to banana jigs. Heavy gear is recommended to battle these giants. In some areas, you may be fishing in depths of over 300 feet of water, so make sure you are ready for the physical challenge. There are so many great places to visit in Alaska. Alaska Lodges offer a great base for many adventures. Planning an Alaskan fishing vacation can be daunting. An Alaska travel specialist can make trip planning a painless process. The Alaska season is short, and the availability of accommodations can become limited the closer it gets to season opening. Advance planning is always advisable.
Of course, Alaska offers much more than fishing. Alaska yacht charters and small ship Alaska cruises are also very popular and offer an exciting platform to experience Alaska's beauty and diversity.
